Obverse description The entire field is occupied by a four-line Persian legend in Nasta'liq calligraphic script, reading: 'Sikka Zad Bar Haft Kishwur Sayaye Fazl Shah Alam Badshah Elahi Hami Din Muhammad' (He who has struck coin over the seven climes, the shadow of divine grace, Emperor Shah Alam, defender of the Muhammadan faith). Floral and star ornaments decorate the field between lines of text. The inscription fills the coin to the rim with no border or effigy present, consistent with the Mughal and late Mughal coinage tradition.
