| Obverse description | The obverse displays a multi-line Persian legend in elegant Nastaliq calligraphy arranged in sweeping curved lines across the field, reading: 'Sikka zad bar haft kishwar saya fazl Ilah Hami ud-din Muhammad Shah Alam Badshah' (He who has put his stamp on the seven climes, Shadow of divine favour, Defender of the religion of Muhammad, Shah Alam, Emperor). The regnal year AH 1202 appears prominently within the legend. The field is decorated with small floral and star ornaments interspersed between the lines of text. The coin bears a finely reeded border encircling the entire design. The inscription is frozen at AH 1202 / Regnal Year 19, a convention adopted for East India Company coinage. |
