Issued as a commemorative following Rajiv Gandhi's assassination on 21 May 1991, this coin appeared within the same calendar year as his death — an unusually compressed production timeline that reflects both the political urgency and the administrative machinery the Reserve Bank of India could mobilize for state commemoratives. Gandhi had served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989, entering office days after his mother Indira Gandhi was killed, and was himself killed by a suicide bomber while campaigning in Tamil Nadu.
