Ranasinghe Premadasa, who had risen from Colombo's urban poor to the presidency, was assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber in May 1993 — just months after this coin entered circulation. The bomber detonated at a political rally in Colombo, killing Premadasa along with dozens of others.
