The Poona mint operated under Peshwa authority at the height of Maratha power, striking rupees that deliberately mimicked Mughal weight standards to facilitate trade across territories where Mughal-derived coinage remained the accepted medium. The Confederacy never fully broke from that monetary convention, even as Mughal central authority had effectively collapsed.
By 1803, following the Second Anglo-Maratha War, the Peshwa was reduced to a British subsidiary alliance, and Poona itself fell under increasing Company influence. Coinage continued until the mint's absorption following the Third Anglo-Maratha War and the formal dissolution of Peshwa authority in 1818.
