The Seychelles Monetary Authority issued this coin following independence from Britain on 29 June 1976, making it among the first coinage struck under the new republic's own financial authority. The archipelago had used the Seychelles rupee under colonial administration, but coins bearing the Monetary Authority's name rather than a British crown dependency designation marked a clean institutional break.
The 1977 date corresponds to the year James Mancham was overthrown in a coup while attending a Commonwealth conference in London, replaced by France-Albert René. Coins from both years circulated without interruption through the transition.
