Obverse description Right-facing bearded bust of President James Mancham, the first President of the Republic of Seychelles, rendered in high relief with fine detail in the hair and beard. The effigy occupies the central field, with the shoulders and collar of a suit jacket visible at the lower truncation. The circumferential legend 'REPUBLIC OF SEYCHELLES' arcs around the upper portion of the coin, engraved by Michael Rizzello.

Reverse description A Seychelles giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) depicted in left-facing profile, rendered in fine naturalistic detail with its distinctive domed, segmented carapace prominently displayed. A sprig of vegetation appears beneath the animal in the lower left field. The commemorative legend 'INDEPENDENCE 1976' arcs across the upper field, while the denomination '1 RUPEE' is inscribed in two lines at the lower portion of the field, with a decorative macron accent over the 'U' in RUPEE.
