Additional information

Abdur Rahman Khan came to power in 1880 under deeply constrained circumstances — installed with British backing following the Second Anglo-Afghan War, he ruled a country whose foreign policy was effectively controlled from Calcutta. This rupee was struck in the first year of his reign, before he had consolidated the internal power that would later earn him the epithet "Iron Amir." The Kabul mint at this period operated with considerable inconsistency, and early issues under Abdur Rahman show significant variation in die alignment and surface finish.
