Mauritius decimalized its currency in 1877, but the rupee's modern coinage identity was shaped far more by the island's post-independence monetary reorganization in the late 1960s, when the Bank of Mauritius was established in 1967 to replace the Board of Commissioners of Currency. This copper-nickel series ran across more than two decades of remarkable economic transformation, covering Mauritius's shift from sugar monoculture to one of Africa's most diversified economies.
