Banque de l'Indo-Chine issued this note for circulation in French India — the handful of coastal enclaves including Pondichéry, Karikal, Mahé, Yanaon, and Chandernagor — not for Indochina proper, where the piastre circulated. The rupee denomination placed French India firmly within the broader Indian monetary zone, and the note was accepted alongside British Indian currency in practice.

The date range spans both world wars and the Japanese occupation period, during which supply from Paris was severely disrupted. Walhain designed several issues for the Banque de France's colonial clients; Deloche's intaglio work on this series is particularly fine for a note of this size.
