Transnistria's commemorative rouble program has produced dozens of issues tied to the Chinese lunar calendar — an unusual thematic choice for a self-declared state on the Moldovan border whose international recognition count stands at zero. The series sells primarily to thematic collectors rather than circulating within Transnistria's cash economy, where Russian roubles, Moldovan lei, and Ukrainian hryvnias all move alongside the official currency.
KM#220 is one of the more modestly produced entries in the sequence. The Fiery Monkey year fell in 2016, making this a forward-issue struck the prior year.
