Transnistria occupies a narrow strip of land between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border, recognized by no UN member state yet fully operational as a de facto republic since 1990. The Transnistrian Republican Bank issues commemorative coinage with complete institutional seriousness — mintage figures, KM references, the works — despite the currency having no legal tender status anywhere outside the territory's own borders.
The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics would have been the topical peg for an earlier issue; by 2017, this references the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, making the dating slightly counterintuitive for collectors cataloging by event year.
