Reverse description The reverse presents a naturalistic depiction of a pair of West Siberian beavers in their habitat, rendered in high relief with fine detail in their fur and surrounding environment. The composition occupies the central field, conveying a sense of naturalism characteristic of the Russian Red Book wildlife series. Along the upper rim, the Cyrillic legend «ЗАПАДНОСИБИРСКИЙ БОБР» (THE WEST SIBERIAN BEAVER) arcs in a semicircular inscription. The remaining field is left uncluttered, allowing the wildlife subject to dominate the design.

Additional information

Part of the Bank of Russia's ongoing wildlife conservation series, this rouble was issued to draw attention to the Siberian beaver (Castor fiber pohlei), a subspecies that had been hunted to near-extinction by the early twentieth century for its fur and castoreum. Soviet-era reintroduction programs in the Ob River basin gradually rebuilt populations, but the subspecies remained vulnerable enough in 2001 to warrant protected status under Russian federal law.

Mintage for conservation-themed roubles in this series was typically capped at 10,000 pieces, nearly all absorbed directly into collector channels — meaning circulated examples are essentially nonexistent.
