Vseslav of Polotsk — known in chronicles as Vseslav the Sorcerer — ruled the Principality of Polotsk through the latter half of the 11th century and remains the only Rus prince ever to have briefly seized the Kievan throne, holding it for approximately seven months in 1068–1069 after a popular uprising drove Iziaslav I from power. His reputation for sorcery, preserved in the Tale of Igor's Campaign, likely reflects genuine fear among contemporaries of a ruler who survived with unusual cunning across nearly five decades of continuous conflict.
Belarus has leaned heavily on Polotsk's medieval history for its commemorative circulation coinage — Vseslav appearing as part of a broader series rehabilitating pre-Muscovite Belarusian identity during the Lukashenko era.
