Part of Belarus's extensive commemorative rouble series issued through the mid-2000s, this piece marks Volkovysk, one of the oldest towns in the country — archaeological evidence places settlement there as far back as the 10th century. The town changed hands repeatedly across Polish, Lithuanian, Russian, and Soviet administrations before becoming part of the Belarusian SSR.
The National Bank of Belarus produced dozens of these regional commemoratives in copper-nickel during this period, with relatively modest mintages that saw limited circulation outside collector channels.
