Additional information

Vincent Dunin-Martsynkevich (1807–1884) was the central figure in the 19th-century Belarusian literary revival, writing in a vernacular that Tsarist authorities considered politically suspect. His 1852 operetta Sialanka — the first theatrical work written in the Belarusian language — was performed once before Russian censors effectively suppressed further productions. He was arrested in 1864 following the Kalinowski uprising and spent years in internal exile, during which he continued writing manuscripts that circulated only privately.

The copper-nickel commemorative rouble series issued by the National Bank of Belarus has become the primary vehicle for rehabilitating figures the Soviet period largely ignored.
