Ivan Krusenstern led the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe between 1803 and 1806, commanding the Nadezhda as part of a joint scientific and diplomatic expedition that also attempted — unsuccessfully — to open trade relations with Japan. The voyage produced detailed charts of the North Pacific that remained in active naval use for decades.
Belarus has issued extensively in this copper-nickel rouble format as a low-cost collectible series, with the Krusenstern piece fitting into a broader run of maritime and explorer subjects produced around 2011.
