Obverse description At center, the State Emblem of the Russian Federation — a double-headed eagle after the design of artist Ivan Bilibin — occupies the central field. A circular legend along the upper rim reads «ОДИН РУБЛЬ 1997 г.» (ONE ROUBLE 1997), while the inscription «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA) runs along the lower rim. Below the eagle, a series of small letters and numerals denotes the metal, fineness, fine metal content (Ag 925, 7.78 g), and the mint mark of the Leningrad Mint (ЛМД).

Additional information

Issued as part of Russia's "Outstanding Events in Russian History" commemorative series, this rouble marks Peter the Great's 1697–1698 Grand Embassy — the tsar's largely incognito tour of Western Europe during which he worked as a shipwright in the Dutch East India Company yards at Zaandam before moving to Deptford, England, to study naval construction under the auspices of William III. The British leg lasted roughly four months, with Peter's entourage famously leaving John Evelyn's rented house at Sayes Court in such a state of destruction that Evelyn submitted a substantial repair bill to the Crown.
