Part of Belarus's long-running series celebrating traditional crafts, this rouble was issued when the National Bank was aggressively expanding its collector coin program — a strategy that drew criticism for flooding the market with thematic issues of questionable long-term demand. Straw plaiting, or salomapляценне, has deep roots in Belarusian rural culture, historically used for household goods, footwear, and religious decoration, and was designated an element of the country's intangible cultural heritage.
