This rouble belongs to Belarus's long-running series commemorating the liberation of Belarusian territory from German occupation during World War II, a conflict the Soviet state — and its successor republics — consistently framed as the Great Patriotic War. Belarus suffered among the highest per-capita losses of any territory in Europe: estimates suggest roughly a quarter of the pre-war population was dead by 1945, military and civilian combined.
KM#294 was struck in copper-nickel at the Minsk Mint facility, which assumed increasing commemorative output in the early 2000s as Belarus developed its domestic numismatic program.
