| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of the Republic of Belarus is depicted centrally in the field, rendered in relief against a smooth background. The arms feature a green outlined map of Belarus superimposed on rays of the rising sun, framed by wreaths of wheat, clover, and flax bound with a ribbon in the colors of the national flag, and surmounted by a five-pointed star. The date 2018 appears below the coat of arms in the lower field. Polotsk's Saint Sophia Cathedral is one of the oldest stone churches in the former Soviet space, begun in the 1040s under Vseslav of Polotsk — the same prince immortalized in the Tale of Igor's Campaign as a near-mythical figure capable of shape-shifting. The building was extensively rebuilt in Baroque form in the 18th century after being used as a granary and later blown up by retreating Swedish forces following the Battle of Poltava in 1709.
Belarus has issued a long-running circulation commemorative series covering architectural monuments across the country; this piece belongs to that program. The Polotsk cathedral remains an active museum and concert hall today.
