Olonets Province was one of dozens of regional Russian authorities that began printing their own emergency notes after the Bolshevik seizure of power fractured the currency supply chain. The 1918 issues were a direct response to the near-total collapse of small-denomination ruble notes in circulation — commercial banks, cooperatives, municipalities, and provincial zemstvos all scrambled to fill the gap simultaneously, which is why the typographic quality of these provincial emissions varies so wildly.
Olonets, a sparsely populated territory bordering Finland, had neither the printing infrastructure nor the economic weight to sustain a meaningful local currency for long. The Soviet consolidation of the region put these notes out of use within months of issue.
