Part of the Bank of Russia's ongoing historical rulers series, this 2009 issue commemorates Nicholas I, who came to power under extraordinary circumstances — his accession in December 1825 was immediately overshadowed by the Decembrist uprising, an armed revolt by reform-minded officers who exploited the succession confusion between Nicholas and his brother Constantine. Nicholas suppressed it within hours and spent the next thirty years ensuring nothing like it would happen again.
