Obverse description The State Coat of Arms of the Soviet Union, featuring a hammer and sickle superimposed on a globe framed by wheat sheaves bound with a ribbon, surmounted by a five-pointed star, occupies the upper field. Below the arms, the Cyrillic legend СССР (USSR) is inscribed in large characters, with the denomination numeral 1 and the word РУБЛЬ (Rouble) arranged centrally beneath, and the date 1989 appearing in the lower exergue.

Reverse description A left-facing bust portrait of the Russian Romantic poet Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814–1841) is rendered in high relief at centre, depicted in military-style dress with an open collar. To the upper left, the legend М. Ю. ЛЕРМОНТОВ is inscribed in a vertical arc. The birth and death years 1814 and 1841 appear in two lines to the right of the portrait. At the lower field, a quill pen is depicted beneath the bust, accompanied by Lermontov's facsimile cursive signature М. Лермонтов.
