Maslenitsa — the Slavic pre-Lenten festival rooted in pre-Christian spring rites — was adopted into the Belarusian commemorative program as part of a broader series documenting folk holidays and traditions. The National Bank issued several such pieces in the mid-2000s, a period when Belarusian cultural identity was being actively promoted through official channels under Lukashenko's government. The oxidized copper-nickel finish was a deliberate choice for this series, lending the pieces an antiqued appearance suited to their folkloric subject matter.
