Additional information

Lew Sapieha served as Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and was the principal architect behind the 1588 Lithuanian Statute — one of the most sophisticated legal codes in 16th-century Europe, which he largely financed from his own fortune. The Belarusian commemorative program has consistently drawn on Grand Duchy figures to anchor a national historical identity distinct from both Russian and Polish frameworks.

KM#338 is part of a broad circulation commemorative series; copper-nickel strikes of this type saw wide distribution and rarely appear with significant wear given their commemorative handling.
