Belarus introduced this rouble in 1997 as part of its early post-Soviet coinage infrastructure, at a moment when the country was simultaneously running a parallel paper currency that had already suffered severe inflationary collapse. The National Bank was attempting to establish metallic coinage credibility while the paper ruble was being denominated in thousands for routine transactions — a contradiction the coins themselves could not resolve.
