Ignacy Domeyko was a Polish-Belarusian geologist and educator who, after participating in the failed November Uprising of 1830 against Russian rule, fled exile in France before emigrating to Chile in 1838. He spent the next half-century mapping the Andes, reforming Chilean higher education, and serving as rector of the Universidad de Chile. A mineral — domeykite — bears his name. Belarus claimed him as part of its commemorative program recovering figures of the Belarusian diaspora whose careers unfolded far beyond the territory that would become the republic.
