Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of Belarus's liberation from German occupation, this coin acknowledges a toll that fell with particular severity on the country: Belarus lost somewhere between a quarter and a third of its entire population between 1941 and 1944, proportionally among the highest losses of any nation in the war. The Minsk region alone saw hundreds of villages burned with their inhabitants inside.
