Transnistria — the narrow strip between the Dniester River and Ukraine — has operated as an unrecognized breakaway state from Moldova since a brief war in 1992, backed militarily and economically by Russia. Its central bank issues fully functioning coinage for domestic circulation despite no UN member state recognizing Transnistrian sovereignty. The Cathedral of the Birth of Christ in Tiraspol was consecrated in 2004, built largely through Russian Orthodox Church funding as part of a broader cultural alignment with Moscow.
The ruble series on nickel-plated steel replaced earlier aluminum-composite issues around this period as Transnistria stabilized its parallel monetary system.
