Belarus and China established formal diplomatic ties in January 1992, immediately following Belarusian independence from the Soviet Union. By 2012, the relationship had deepened considerably — China had become one of Belarus's primary creditors, extending multi-billion dollar loans that helped Lukashenko's government weather Western financial pressure. This coin marks the twentieth anniversary of that arrangement.

Belarus issued a substantial number of commemorative roubles in copper-nickel during this period, many targeting the collector market rather than circulation.
