Belarus issued a long-running commemorative series honoring historical explorers and navigators throughout the 2000s and 2010s, of which this is one installment. Vespucci's inclusion is historically pointed: it was his insistence, contra Columbus, that the western Atlantic landmass was a previously unknown continent — not Asia — that prompted cartographer Martin Waldseemüller to name it "America" in his 1507 Universalis Cosmographia.
Copper-nickel issues from this Belarusian explorer series circulated alongside silver versions of the same designs, the latter struck for collectors. The base-metal pieces were intended for nominal circulation but rarely saw it.
