Obverse description King James I is depicted enthroned in full royal regalia, facing forward, wearing an arched imperial crown and richly draped robes. He holds a sceptre in his right hand and an orb in his left, seated upon an elaborately decorated throne flanked by two ornamental columns. A large Tudor rose is rendered beneath the throne, while the field displays the characteristic lobed inner border of the Rose-ryal type. The peripheral Latin legend, reading clockwise, is contained between an inner beaded border and the coin's edge.
