| Obverse description | Draped bust of Empress Maria Theresa facing right, her hair dressed and veiled, wearing a lace-trimmed bodice with a brooch at the shoulder. The circular legend reads M·THERESIA·D·G· R·IMP·HU·BO·REG· around the upper field, with the mintmaster initials S·F· in the lower exergue. A prominent Arabic countermark bearing the inscription of the Sheikh of Ra's Bab al-Mandab has been applied to the obverse field, partially overlapping the empress's portrait, authenticating the coin's local circulation authority circa 1880–1890. |
