Bank Negara introduced this circulation commemorative to mark the 50th anniversary of the Muzium Negara, which opened in 1963 — the same year Malaya, Singapore, and the Borneo territories merged to form Malaysia. The museum's founding was itself a politically loaded act, an attempt to construct a unified national identity from a newly federated, ethnically plural state.
Nordic gold — the same copper-aluminium-zinc-tin alloy used across much of modern European coinage — was an unusual choice for a Malaysian commemorative ringgit, departing from the brass-clad steel of regular circulation issues.
