The Yayasan Sabah — Sabah Foundation — was established in 1966 to manage the state's timber resources and channel revenues into education and development for the people of Sabah. This commemorative ringgit marks its 50th anniversary. Nordic gold, the copper-aluminum-zinc-tin alloy used here, was chosen by numerous central banks in the 1990s and 2000s specifically because its golden appearance resists counterfeiting while keeping base-metal production costs low.
