Issued to commemorate the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, known as LIMA, this coin marks Malaysia's sustained effort to position the duty-free island of Langkawi as a platform for regional trade and defence commerce. The LIMA exhibition had been running since 1991 and by 2003 had grown into one of Southeast Asia's most significant aerospace and naval shows, drawing state buyers and defence contractors from across the Indo-Pacific.
Bank Negara issued commemorative ringgit coins of this type in limited runs, and circulation was largely ceremonial — most examples were sold directly in packaging rather than released into general use.
