Additional information

Malaysia's first series of ringgit coins launched in 1967 following the collapse of the Malaya and British Borneo dollar system, which had served a currency union stretching across territories that were by then politically incompatible. The 1 Ringgit piece was the largest denomination struck for general circulation and saw heavy use through the early 1970s as Malaysia's export-driven economy expanded rapidly under the New Economic Policy introduced after the 1969 racial riots.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong V was Abdul Halim of Kedah, who served his first term as paramount ruler from 1970 to 1975.
