Brunei's first independent currency series, issued the year the Brunei dollar formally replaced the Malaya and British Borneo dollar under the terms of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement with Singapore and Malaysia. All three currencies were pegged at par and remained mutually interchangeable — a monetary arrangement that persisted between Brunei and Singapore without interruption to the present day.
Bradbury, Wilkinson handled the printing, their New Malden works being the standard choice for British-administered territories in transition during this period. The P#1 designation confirms this as the founding note of the series.
