Natural rubber production in Malaya traces directly to nine seedlings smuggled out of Brazil by Henry Wickham in 1876 — a transfer that eventually collapsed the Amazon rubber monopoly and built the foundation of the Malayan colonial economy. By 1977, when this coin was issued, Malaysia had long been the world's largest rubber producer, though that position was already under pressure from synthetic alternatives and emerging competition from Indonesia.
Bank Negara chose the centennial to reassert the commodity's national significance at precisely the moment its dominance was slipping.
