Obverse description A fully armored knight stands facing, wearing a plumed helmet and holding an upraised sword in his right hand while his left hand rests upon a crowned heraldic shield bearing the arms of Utrecht, positioned at his feet amid scattered foliage. The figure is rendered in the traditional Dutch rijksdaalder style, conveying martial authority. The encircling Latin legend reads MO:NO:ARG:PRO:CONF:BELG:TRAI: (New Silver Coin of the Confederation of Belgium-Utrecht), separated by pellets and running clockwise around the milled border.

Additional information

Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was installed as King of Holland by his brother in 1806, a throne he never asked for and spent three years trying to make work. He learned Dutch, converted to the local Reformed Church, and irritated Napoleon enormously by actually governing in Dutch interests rather than French ones — refusing, among other things, to enforce the Continental System with sufficient brutality. This coin was struck across that entire contested reign.

Napoleon dissolved the Kingdom of Holland outright in 1810, annexing it directly into France. Issues from the final months of 1808 onward were never struck.
