The Royal Opera House Muscat opened in October 2011 after nearly a decade of construction, making this coin a direct issue commemorating the inauguration. Sultan Qaboos, who studied at Sandhurst and developed a serious interest in Western classical music, personally drove the project — an unusual institutional commitment to opera in the Arabian Peninsula that drew considerable international attention at the time.
