Additional information

Buraimi sits at the edge of the Rub' al Khali on the Omani-Emirati border, and its ownership was the subject of a territorial dispute that festered from the late 1940s until Saudi Arabia formally renounced its claim in 1974. The fort commemorated here was at the geographic center of that standoff, which at various points involved Saudi-backed tribal infiltration, British political officers, and an abortive arbitration in Geneva that collapsed in 1955.

The 1995 issue is part of Oman's ongoing architectural heritage series launched under Sultan Qaboos, which systematically documented fortifications across the country — many of which had been restored under his direct patronage after decades of neglect.
