Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's accession following the 1970 palace coup in which he deposed his own father, Said bin Taimur — a ruler so isolationist that Oman had fewer than ten kilometers of paved road at the time. The coin commemorates a quarter-century of the development program Qaboos immediately launched upon taking power.
The Burj Al Nahda, or Tower of Renaissance, in Ruwi was itself a symbol of that modernization drive. Mintage for the gold version was strictly limited, as with most Central Bank of Oman commemorative gold issues of the period.
