Mustafa III was Ottoman sultan during this issue, but the coins struck in Tunisia under the Husainid beys carried local administrative weight well beyond their nominal Ottoman allegiance — Tunis had operated with effective monetary autonomy since the early eighteenth century. The billon alloy used here reflects chronic silver shortages that plagued North African mints throughout this period, with fineness varying considerably across the run.
KM#57 is known with meaningful die variation in the toughra rendering.
