Issued under the FAO coinage program, a United Nations initiative that persuaded dozens of governments during the 1970s to dedicate circulating issues to themes of food production and agricultural development. Iran's participation came at a moment of aggressive state-directed modernization under the White Revolution, which had redistributed land from large landowners to rural peasants beginning in 1963 — making the agricultural messaging politically convenient for the Shah's government rather than merely ceremonial.
The FAO series pieces from Iran are frequently overlooked by collectors focused on the imperial coinage proper, keeping acquisition costs low relative to their limited production window.
