Obverse description The obverse field is entirely occupied by a five-line Arabic calligraphic legend in bold Thuluth script, reading the Ottoman imperial titulature of Sultan Mahmud II. The inscription is arranged in horizontal registers across the coin's face and translates as 'Sultan of the Two Lands and Khagan of the Two Seas, Sultan Mahmud Khan, may his victory be glorified.' The field is flat and unadorned, with the emphasis placed entirely on the calligraphic text. The coin is bordered by a raised rope or cable inner circle and a beaded outer rim.
