The International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds, established in 2009 in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, was created partly to address Western governments' anxieties about state-controlled capital moving into strategic industries. Oman's own sovereign wealth fund, the Oman Investment Authority, manages assets exceeding $50 billion USD — substantial for a country of its size. This commemorative marks Oman's hosting of the IFSWF annual meeting, one of the few such issues to treat a multilateral financial governance body as subject matter worthy of a numismatic release.
