| Obverse description | The national emblem of the Sultanate of Oman occupies the central field, depicting a khanjar dagger within its sheath superimposed upon two crossed swords. The emblem is rendered in relief against a polished field. Oman's National Day commemorates the accession of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who seized power from his father Said bin Taimur in a palace coup on July 23, 1970. The elder Sultan had ruled with such deliberate austerity — restricting education, medicine, and infrastructure — that Oman remained one of the least developed countries in the Arabian Peninsula despite significant oil revenues. Qaboos reversed this almost immediately.
The 35th anniversary issue was struck to .925 silver, a fineness Oman used consistently for its commemorative rial series through this period.
