| Obverse description | Half-length armoured effigy of Emperor Ferdinand I facing right, bearded, holding a sceptre in his right hand and a sword in his left, set within a double-circle border. The vertical date appears in the right field. The encircling Latin legend reads FERDINANDVS D G EL RO IM S AVG GER HVN, an abbreviated form of Ferdinandus Dei Gratia Electus Romanorum Imperator Semper Augustus Germaniae Hungariae, proclaiming his imperial and royal titles. The portrait is rendered in the robust Renaissance style typical of mid-sixteenth-century Habsburg coinage. |
