Wehrmacht Reichspfennig notes were military auxiliary currency — issued specifically for use within the German armed forces and their occupied territories, not valid in ordinary domestic commerce. The 1-Pfennig denomination was the smallest in the Wehrmacht series, introduced in 1940 alongside a broader set of Heeresmünzen and Behelfszahlungsmittel intended to prevent soldiers from draining occupied economies of hard currency and coins.

Rosenberg 500 is among the more common survivors of the series, though the sheer volume originally printed makes condition the only meaningful variable for collectors.
